Sewing for the Memorial Day Weekend

With Memorial Day weekend fast approaching, many of us look forward to a well-deserved break filled with cookouts, parades, graduations, beach trips, and church services. Now is the perfect time to plan ahead and start working on sewing projects to wear for the holiday.  In this blog post, I have some creative ideas and suggestions for fabrics and patterns to make your Memorial Day weekend chic. So, keep reading for my picks for five different events that you can attend during the long weekend.

Backyard Barbecue: The Memorial weekend is the official start to BBQ season! For a backyard barbecue, you want to be comfortable and casual, but still stylish. As the hostess, a pair of pants in a rayon blend with interesting ties on the side seam will set the fashion tone! You can wear a classic t-shirt but if you want to up your fashion game, consider a one-shouldered top made of jersey knit.

If you are the guest at the barbecue and love trends opt for a cargo skirt in a cotton twill and pair it with a printed knit top with cut-out shoulder details.  This look is comfortable, yet stylish, and perfect for soaking up the sunshine and enjoying some delicious BBQ.

Parade: If you’re planning to attend a parade, you’ll want to dress for the warm weather, but also look festive. Sew a pair of comfortable sailor shorts in denim and a lightweight cotton top.  Don’t forget to wear a poppy and sunscreen!

Beach: A day at the beach calls for a swimsuit, but if you plan to go out for lunch or dinner, you’ll want to wear something that’s easy to slip on over your swimsuit. A linen or cotton maxi dress paired with metallic sandals is a great option.

Graduations: Memorial weekend is also a time for high school graduation ceremonies (shout out to my niece!).  A luncheon or dinner usually follows this momentous occasion so you’ll want to dress accordingly. A sundress is perfect. Choose a flowy rayon fabric that will keep you cool in the summer heat. Pair your outfit with some wedges or dressy sandals for a polished look.

Church Service: If you plan to attend a church service on Memorial Day weekend, keep it chic with flared cropped pants and a jacket.  Use 4-ply viscose crepe in patriotic colors like scarlet or mallard blue.

Memorial Day weekend is a time to reflect and celebrate, and with these outfit ideas, you’ll be ready for any event that comes your way!
