Wardrobe Planning with Ann: Faux Leather Coat

A heavy wool coat is not high on the must-have list here in South Texas.  The weather seldom gets cold enough.  But our days and nights do get chilly and Ann needed a new outerwear piece.

To get inspiration for Ann’s new coat, I went to my favorite website, Net-a-Porter.  I saw this cardigan like coat (tan coat in the middle row of Ann’s mood board) that would look great on her.  It has an easy, effortless look that always works well for a Mom-on-the-Go.

I selected the red faux leather because of the beautiful bright color and cool, edgy vibe.  Faux leather has improved dramatically from its original iteration.  The current faux leathers look very upscale.  Bonus– it will look great on Valentine’s Day!!

Ann used a combination of her Red Lace Skirt block and the bodice block from the Black Eyelet Dress.

I made a few minor adjustments to the armhole and neckline so the coat would hang better.

To make this look more like real leather, Ann cut the front and back into sections.

The pockets are oversized.  This is a fashion-forward look but also functional for a Mom that has to “hold” a lot of things for the kids. 🙂

Sewing Tip:  If you don’t have a Teflon or walking foot, use scotch tape on the bottom of your presser foot.  This will help the fabric to glide smoother while topstitching.

Love your coat. Extremely high end and you wear it well.
Would like to see steps on how you made the black with red trim t-shirt.

Fabulous coat! So on trend, but still practical (love the pockets) and very wearable.

As always Ann looks great. You chose the perfect color faux leather. And the idea of cutting the pieces so it would look more like real leather was genius! Beautiful collaboration!
